Meanie’s History with Manga
Meanie started reading manga around 7th grade, and followed Shonen Jump releases for years. Their reading waned once they started college. During 2020’s COVID-19 isolation, they blasted through all of Dorohedoro in two days, and their love for the medium was swiftly rekindled.
Soon they realized they needed a broader understanding of the subject. In September 2021, they began a “WSJ speedrun,” in which they read all of Black Clover, Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Tokyo Ghoul, and Tokyo Ghoul: Re in as little time as possible. Some went smoothly: Bleach only took 8 days. Naruto and One Piece, however, took weeks. Meanie continued to read for fun alongside the challenge (as well as to keep themself sane).
Since reconnecting with their manga reading habit, they have enjoyed discussing manga writing and genre conventions, and have even helped to organize a small, private, virtual convention with their friends. Now they look forward to establishing an online presence based around thorough and clear analyses that may or may not fit conventional understandings of the series they write about.
Meanie also has plans to develop a number of graphic novels, mainly exploring science fiction/fantasy and action concepts.
